The Contract for the Web: Creating Opportunity For Everyone
December. 12, 2018 / JOHN
Today at the Web Summit, Tim and Web Foundation CEO Adrian Lovett launched the Contract for the Web, an initiative to ensure governments, companies and citizens around the world help protect the open web as a public good and a basic right for everyone. Tim has always fought for the web and, speaking as his partner at Inrupt, we will too. I’m proud that Inrupt joins the many global leaders and influencers who have also signed the contract, committing us all to ensuring the web delivers opportunity, value, choice and healthy competition.
Per the Web Foundation, “The web was designed to bring people together and make knowledge freely available. Everyone has a role to play to ensure the web serves humanity. By committing to the following principles, governments, companies and citizens around the world can help protect the open web as a public good and a basic right for everyone.”
Of course, we’re very supportive. Inrupt’s mission is to reset the balance of power on the web and reignite its true potential. In particular, two of the Contract’s core principles are “respecting consumers’ privacy and personal data so people are in control of their lives online.” This goal is at the very heart of what we’re building at Inrupt - a world where people achieve empowerment through data. And, to “develop technologies that support the best in humanity and challenge the worst”. I couldn’t have summed up Inrupt’ s mission any better if tried.
Hats off to Tim and Adrian and the other co-signees of the Contract. Together we will create a web that is truly is for everyone.
