Inrupt gives support as the Open Data Institute commits to the Solid movement
Inrupt is pleased to welcome the Open Data Institute (ODI), a non-profit focused on fostering healthy data ecosystems, as a newly dedicated partner in the global Solid community.
The UK-based ODI announced today that it will make Solid a core part of its data stewardship mission. The commitment is a recognition of Solid’s momentum and importance to data on the web, a result of years of dedication, cooperation and expertise from the entire Solid community.
The ODI was founded in 2012 by Sir Nigel Shadbolt and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Inrupt’s co-founder and CTO. It works with companies and governments in the United Kingdom and beyond to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem.
Inrupt believes the ODI’s long experience in advising policy-makers on data technologies and leading a community of data ethics professionals will be a valuable asset to the Solid mission.
In support of the ODI’s plans, Inrupt has committed to help the non-profit with community operations and expand the Solid-based services it can offer.
“In speaking with the ODI about taking an active role in Solid, it quickly became clear that they would provide a great complement to Inrupt’s strengths and the vibrancy of the open source community,” said Inrupt CEO and co-founder John Bruce. “Talking to governments and corporations around the world, we often open discussions about the policy and societal effects of Solid. Through their work with the UK government and others, the ODI has proven their ability to foster data ecosystems that work for everyone.”
Since our founding, Inrupt has been a proud leader in the mission to drive Solid’s adoption around the globe. We look forward to continuing our active contributors to the community via our open source software and our work on the Solid specification. And we will continue to help corporations and governments build new, innovative products and services on our enterprise-grade software for the web.
The ODI’s commitment follows several recent milestones for Inrupt and Solid. In September, Inrupt’s Enterprise Solid Server became the first ISO-certified implementation of the Solid specification. The World Wide Web Consortium soon after voted to form a Working Group dedicated to the standardization of the Solid specifications.
“I am thrilled to have the ODI join the Solid movement,” said Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Inrupt’s CTO. “Together we will all deliver the web of collaboration, creativity and compassion that I have always envisioned.”
